Fernley teen killed in SUV rollover accident
A 14-year-old Fernley boy died Monday night when a sport utility vehicle rolled in the Ceresola Flats area north of Fernley, Washoe County sheriff’s deputies said.
A 17-year-old with a learner’s permit took his uncle’s SUV without permission and went four-wheeling with six Fernley males ranging in age from 14 to 20. The driver admitted smoking marijuana before the accident, the sheriff’s office said.
Two passengers were in the truck bed when it rolled. The 14-year-old was ejected before and the SUV rolled over him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Passers-by notified authorities
Four people were taken by ground ambulance to Renown Regional Medical Center for nonlife-threatening injuries, and a fifth was taken from the area by a private vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
One person was reported dazed and left the scene.
The Washoe County Search and Rescue Team and helicopter searched for him, but he was later found at his Fernley home, the sheriff’s office said.
The injured have been treated and released, the sheriff’s office said.
The teen driver was booked into the Jan Evans Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance causing death.
